Houston thunderstorms can interrupt power and damage unprotected electronics. Here is how to reduce avoidable computer downtime.
Why storms are a computer problem
An abrupt outage can interrupt file writes, and power fluctuations can affect electronics. A surge protector can reduce some electrical risks, but it cannot keep a desktop running when power fails.
Choose protection that fits the equipment
For a desktop computer, a properly sized uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provides temporary battery power so you can save work and shut down. A UPS is not intended to power a computer indefinitely. Check its wattage rating and replace worn batteries according to the manufacturer’s guidance.
Keep a backup separate
A backup stored only on a device attached to the same computer can be vulnerable to the same incident. Use a reliable backup process with at least one separate copy, and periodically confirm that you can restore your files.
After an outage
If a computer makes unusual noises, will not boot, or repeatedly loses power, avoid repeated attempts to force it on. A technician can check the power supply, storage and other components before more damage occurs.
